When your weeknights are busy with running the kids to and fro, you don’t want to have to spend a lot of time in the kitchen, but you do want to eat food that is healthy AND tastes good. Instead of reaching for those packets of premade spice blends at the grocery store, take just a few minutes one night to throw some seasonings together to have your own homemade spice blends on hand.
Why you should make your own homemade spice blends
When you make your own seasonings, you have total control over the ingredients making your mix WAY better for you and your family. A lot of spice mixes on the shelves at the grocery store include fillers such as sugar, anti-caking ingredients (so the spices don’t clump up), and even MSG (monosodium glutamate, a flavor enhancer that “overexcites your cells to the point of death”…according to Dr. Mercola). When you make your own seasoning mixes, you won’t have to worry about whether or not your spices are clean; you will KNOW they are.
You can customize the blends to suit your family’s taste. My family is not fond of super spicy foods, so when I make my blends, I can decrease the amount of spices like cumin and chili powder to make them more appetizing to my kids.
Guaranteed freshness. You know how long you have your spices, but you do not know how long those remade mixes have been sitting on the shelves at your grocery store. Making your own guarantees that what you are feeding your family is relatively fresh.
And, it is generally cheaper to make your own rather than buying them.
How to store the homemade spice blends
All you need are airtight containers like mason jars or even old spice jars that you have washed and reuse. I personally like to use the jars we have leftover after we have used our ghee. They are just the right size with screw on lids. They keep the spice blends fresh for several months. Plus, this is easy on the environment because I am not throwing the jars away. I just use a permanent marker to write the name of the spice blend on the top of the jar and add any serving measurement I may want to remember.
